Responsibilities: Surveys the condition of collections; processes materials received through the Library's basic preservation program; participates in administering grant-funded brittle book microfilming projects; undertakes minor collections conservation actions; and completes other appropriate special projects, based upon the intern's experience and interests.
Requires: M.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited library school. Knowledge of preservation and conservation practices and techniques, as demonstrated through previous relevant experience, and/or successful completion of a formal program in the preservation of library and archival materials preferred. Experience in a research library or organization preferred. Familiarity with the preservation of non-book materials desirable.

Head, Preservation Department

Position Duties: Reports to the Assistant Director for Technical Services; responsible for managing and coordinating activities of the Preservation Department (Materials processing section, Bindery section, and Book reformatting section). Includes the training and supervision of 5 full-time staff and 2.5 FTE student assistants. Qualifications: The successful candidate must have received the MLS from an ALA-accredited graduate program; three years experience in an academic or research library setting in preservation or preservation-related areas (may include bindery operations, serials management); broad knowledge of preservation based on work experience, equivalent coursework, or related training; proven administrative and supervisory skills; familiarity with automated library systems and library binding practices; understanding of serials issues; ability to plan and implement projects and to work independently; strong oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff at all levels.
Salary: Starting salary from $28,776 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Conservation Laboratory Faculty Member
University of Texas at Austin
The Preservation and Conservation Education Programs (PCEP) is seeking nominations and applications for a book conservator to teach the main sequence of laboratory courses for first and second year students. This faculty member will be responsible for the teaching of physical treatment for circulating and special collection materials. Although development of the syllabus is the responsibility of the faculty member, topics to be taught are expected to include protective enclosures and techniques for refurbishing book collections; paper testing, washing, resizing, deacidification and repair; binding, including sewing and other forms of leaf attachment, covering materials and methods; historical binding techniques; book repair; rebinding; and full conservation treatment. Also included are treatment documentation and laboratory design and management. The conservator will also be responsible for managing the teaching laboratory; coordinating or teaching the laboratory course for preservation administrators; participating in recruitment and curriculum decisions with the full PCEP faculty; and all other responsibilities of a faculty member including service to the profession, the school and research.
Qualifications: Considerable training and skill in the area of book conservation; successful experience in the treatment of books and paper in an institutional environment; distinguished record of professional service and research; knowledge of book technology, binding history and the book arts. Ability, experience, and commitment to teaching and research, as well as the ability to communicate with students at a variety of skill levels, will be emphasized. Preferred are an MLS from an accredited graduate program, graduate training in conservation, and an advanced degree in an appropriate subject area.
The position will be available the fall semester of 1993. Considerable participation in the design and implementation of the laboratory space and the acceptance of students will take place over the 1992/1993 academic year if possible. This position is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Paper Conservation Intern

Assistant General Collections Conservator

Performs array of repairs and conservation treatments in a production setting on paper, cloth and leather bindings and textblocks. Reports to General Collections Conservator.
Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; minimum one year prior experience in collections conservation in a library or archives preservation program. Must have demonstrated knowledge/experience in conservation/preservation of library materials, ability and skill to work independently, communicate effectively and contribute to preservation program in complex organization; previous experience in training and supervision.
