Leafcasting Translation Ready

Last April, the English translation of the historical material in Per Laursen's leafcasting book was announced on the Editor's Page, and a sample section mailed out to readers. I said it was ready to be pasted up and printed, and we were taking orders. (Earlier I had planned to issue it in sections, and send it out with the Newsletter, but this turned out to be unworkable.) It actually took a few more months after the April announcement to check out the very international bibliography, but the translation has now been printed and orders can be filled immediately. It costs $30. The reference is:

The Move to Austin

About a year ago I decided to move to Austin, because of the forthcoming (now actual) move of the Conservation Education Programs from Columbia University to the University of Texas. Gary Frost, an Abbey Publications trustee, had already drawn my attention to the large concentration of book and paper people here.

I scouted the housing market in Austin in April and June, but did not find a good house I could afford till mid-September. It is twice as big as the apartment we used for an office in Provo, but only about 30% more expensive, and 30 years newer. (I occupy 15% of the floor space and charge the corporation rent for the rest.)

I drove down, closed on the Austin house November 5, and flew back. The moving crew came to pack up the Provo office November 16, stepping around the loyal office staff, who wanted to see that the day's mail was processed and in good order before the men took the last desk away.

The driver called later to say the contents of the office and storage unit came to over six tons! This does not include personal belongings--I had driven them down in September to an apartment I was using as a base of operations.

This time I flew down and met the moving van at the house with my floor plan and equipment layout to see that everything was unloaded into the right room. After they left, I unloaded enough boxes to enable me to put out newsletters, answer the phone and send out pH pens. But since none of the old staff moved to Texas with me, and the new staff will not start full time till next week, it has not been possible until now to put out a newsletter. The other two issues of Volume 15 will be late, but they will appear and everyone who paid for their 1992 subscription will get one.The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1250 subscribers. All subscriptions are for the calendar year. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise, until September 1; after that, it is assumed that the subscription is for the following year. Checks or international money orders may be made out in U.S. dollars or English pounds, payable to Abbey Publications; send to 7105 Geneva Dr., Austin, TX 78723, USA.

Job advertisements are billed at the rate of $50 for the heading and the first ten lines (5560 characters per line), plus $2 per line thereafter. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received will be honored within 6 months of publication. Defective issues will be gladly replaced on request. A complete list of back issues is available.

Descriptions even enthusiastic descriptions--of products or services in this Newsletter are not to be taken as endorsements or policy statements.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts and the Institute of Paper Science & Technology Abstract Bulletin. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print, and each volume has its own index. Interim indexes are available on request.

The Editor encourages readers to photocopy freely from the Newsletter; but the Editor's permission must be obtained before making more than 20 copies of any part. This allows any necessary corrections to be made before duplication.

Abbey Publications is a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation (tax ID #870436104). Its other publication is the Alkaline Paper Advocate. It is the policy of Abbey Publications to use alkaline paper for both newsletters. In recent years, the paper has been Weyerhaeuser Cougar Opaque, which meets the ANSI standard.
