Corrections and Clarifications

• In the Literature section of the last issue, in the report of the Canadian Conservation Institute's adhesive testing program, Beva 371 was listed as a PVA. This is because the CCI lists it as a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer, like Jade 403 and Elvace 1874. What distinguishes it from these other adhesives are the additives. Beva 371 contains ketone resin N, paraffin and phthalate; Jade 403 contains VAL/VAC (vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer), soap, and polyacrylamide; and Elvace 1874 contains VAL/VAC, soap and something that gives an unidentified peak at 1125 cm-1.
• The VideoVault described on p. 115 in the last issue is not into production yet. It was announced prematurely--sorry.
• The fax number for ordering the book Conservation of Plastics, reviewed on p.11 in the last issue by Alan Calmes, was wrong, though it was taken straight from the Conservation Unit's announcement. It actually belongs to an unfortunate woman who has been waked up repeatedly in the middle of the night by Americans trying to fax their order to the publishers. By now she has probably either died of exasperation or changed her number, but the number printed on page 11 should be corrected anyhow. The genuine true fax number for ordering that book is 0745-813484. Of course, as with any international call, you have to dial 011 first, then the number for the country (44), then drop the zero and dial the rest of the number as given.
• Please accept the editor's humble apologies for all that garbage in the Events section in the last issue. Events listings from a previous draft were printed along with the final draft, resulting in duplicate materials.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1250 subscribers. All subscriptions are for the calendar year. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise, until September 1; after that, it is assumed that the subscription is for the following year. Checks or international money orders may be made out in U.S. dollars or English pounds, payable to Abbey Publications; send to 7105 Geneva Dr., Austin, TX 78723, USA. International payments can be made by VISA or Mastercard.

Paid advertisements, except for job ads, are not accepted. Job advertisements are billed at the rate of $50 for the heading and the first ten lines (55-60 characters per line), plus $2 per line thereafter. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Claims for issues never received will be honored within a year of publication. Defective issues will be gladly replaced on request.

Descriptions--even enthusiastic descriptions--of products or services in this Newsletter are not to be taken as endorsements or policy statements

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts and the Institute of Paper Science & Technology Abstract Bulletin. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print, and each volume has its own index.

The Editor encourages readers to photocopy freely from the Newsletter; but the Editor's permission must be obtained before making more than 20 copies of lengthy or signed articles. This allows any necessary corrections or updates to be made, and reprint permissions to be obtained, before duplication.

Abbey Publications is a nonprofit corporation set up to encourage preservation of the written record, including the use of lasting materials in the creation of records. Its other publication is the Alkaline Paper Advocate. It is the policy of Abbey Publications to use permanent paper for both newsletters. In recent years, the paper has been Weyerhaeuser Cougar Opaque, which meets the ANSI standard (Z39.48-1992).
