Courses and Workshops
- Three day-long conservation environment workshops will be
offered March 21-23 at the New York University Real Estate
Institute. The instructor is William P. Lull. Conservation
Environments for Museums and Libraries, on March 21,
discusses collection safety and control of humidity, temperature,
lighting, particulates and gaseous contamination. Typical problems,
solutions and relative costs are covered. Fundamentals of
Conservation Environment Lighting, on March 22, will have
demonstrations using typical light sources and measurement
equipment. Conservation Environment Case Studies, on
March 23, will consider aspects of architectural design, fixtures
and finishes, HVAC, lighting, fire protection, and environmental
monitoring systems; it includes a tour of a completed project. For

- The Fashion Institute of Technology, a college of art, design,
business and technology, is considering offering a few courses in
conservation skills and practices for paper and textiles. The paper
conservation course or courses would cover deacidification,
encapsulation, washing, lining and storage, and would be part of a
part-time post-baccalaureate certificate program. The Institute is
at 7th Avenue and 27th Street, New York City 10001-5992.
- The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies (203 East
Seminary, PO Box 66, Mt. Carroll, IL 61053, 815/ 244-1173) has
prepared a preliminary course announcement for 1994. About half the
collections care courses and all four of the refresher courses are
relevant to paper conservation and preservation, e.g., Environmental
Monitoring and Control, Care of Photographic Collections, Care of
Works of Art on Paper, Evaluation of Materials for Storage &
Exhibit, Book Repair Workshop, and Removal of Pressure Sensitive
Tapes and Tape Stains. Most courses are 4-5 days in length, and end
on a Saturday. Fees average $500-$600 per course, including housing
and two meals a day. Financial assistance of up to 50% of course
costs will be available for collections care courses, and additional
funding for the refresher courses is possible.
- The Centre for Photographic Conservation, in London, will offer
six courses next August and September. Four of them will be short
courses, only 3-5 days long, but one is a seven-week course on
preservation and conservation of photographic materials and one is a
four-week workshop in photographic conservation for experienced
conservators and conservation students. For information about fees,
