Director of Preservation and Conservation Studies

University of Texas at Austin

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at The University of Texas at Austin seeks a Director of Preservation and Conservation Studies. Preservation and Conservation Studies (PCS) is the only full graduate program in the United States for the education of preservation administrators and conservators for libraries, archives, and historical societies. Austin provides a dynamic environment for the program. The local preservation and conservation community includes nationally and internationally recognized private and public archival institutions, conservation laboratories, binderies, and editorial offices of preservation publications.

The Director will be a recognized leader in preservation administration in libraries and/or archives, demonstrated by a record of publications, professional activities, and other evidences of leadership. The Director has both administrative and teaching responsibilities, reports to the Dean of GSLIS, and serves on relevant GSLIS faculty committees. Specific responsibilities of the Director include:

• Overall management of the program and its staff,
• Overseeing operation of PCS facilities, including laboratories and the resource center,
• Preparation of grant proposals and conducting other development activities,
• Teaching courses in the management of preservation programs,
• Editing Conservation Administration News,
• Preparing and administering the budget,
• Coordinating the Conservation Forums series, other educational programs, and meetings of the Preservation and Conservation Studies Advisory Committee.

Requirements are a master's degree in library and information science or a related field and a minimum of five years' experience in managing a preservation program in a library, archives, or historical society. Experience in teaching is highly desirable. Salary is competitive.

1994-95 IMS Book Conservation & NEA Paper Conservation Internships

Pierpont Morgan Library

The Pierpont Morgan Library offers two full-time advanced internships, in book and paper conservation, beginning October 1994. These internships will provide experience working with conservation problems from the Morgan's unique collection. Stipends are $16,500 for a 9-month book conservation internship and $22,000 for a 12-month paper conservation internship, both pending funding. Benefits include health and major medical insurance, 17 days of paid vacation, and registration, travel, and per diem for the AIC conference. Application is open to US citizens and permanent residents who are recent graduates of recognized conservation programs, or students with equivalent experience. UMI Preservation Fellowship

University of Pittsburgh

The UMI Preservation Fellowship for the 1994-95 academic year at the Department of Library Science, SLIS, University of Pittsburgh, is open for applications. The Fellowship is intended for MLS or CAS students who intend preservation as a major career focus. Application deadline is May 15, 1994 with the award ($15,000) announced by June 15, 1994. Bookbinding Instructor

North Bennet Street School, Boston

North Bennet Street School is looking for an instructor in hand bookbinding skills to begin September 1994. Modern book conservation practice is emphasized in a course that focuses primarily on the development of traditional skills and techniques. The instructor is responsible for teaching twelve students in a two-year curriculum that now includes: non-adhesive bindings; several case binding structures; limited edition binding; binding of single sheets; protective enclosures; paper mending; washing and deacidification of paper; tool preparation; leather split-board binding; laced-board, tight-joint structures; finishing in blind and gold; and limp vellum binding.

NBSS is one of the earliest craft training schools in the U.S., currently training for employment in fields as diverse as carpentry, locksmithing, jewelry making and repair, piano technology, and violin making and restoration. The teaching environment is informal, but of professional standard. The group of advisors for the bookbinding course is active and very supportive.

The bookbinding course meets 8:00-2:00, Monday through Friday, September through June. The bookbinding class is usually divided between six first-year and six second-year students. There is an excellent collection of books and other printed material, as well as a videotape library, in the bindery. A small budget is available for guest speakers and local field trips.

The instructor is responsible for classroom teaching and demonstration, preparation, evaluation of students' work, and ordering materials. The bindery is available for personal work when not otherwise scheduled. July and August are not scheduled, but we offer opportunities to teach in short-term summer workshops for professionals.

Candidates are expected to have substantial bookbinding experience gained through supervised formal training programs and benchwork employment in the field. We are looking for someone with teaching experience or proven ability to communicate with groups or individuals. North Bennet Street School is an equal opportunity employer. Assistant/Associate Conservator of Paper

Intermuseum Laboratory

The Intermuseum Laboratory seeks a conservator of paper materials to join its staff. Qualifications include graduation from a recognized conservation training program and several years experience in a paper conservation laboratory or museum conservation department following graduation. The selected conservator will work with members and clients of the Intermuseum Conservation Association, examining and carrying out treatment on works of art on paper, documents, and related paper-based materials. Familiarity with photographic materials and their conservation is highly desirable.

Additional staff activities include participating in surveys, both of paper collections and carrying out CAP facility assessments, and contributing to the educational programs and other outreach activities of the laboratory. Some travel will be required.

The Intermuseum Laboratory is located in the college community of Oberlin, Ohio, sharing space with the Allen Memorial Art Museum complex. The center provides conservation services in paper, paintings and objects conservation to institutions within Ohio and throughout the Midwest. It is located within a short driving distance to collections in Cleveland, Toledo, and Columbus.
