Brian J. Baird was appointed the first Preservation Librarian of the University of Kansas Libraries, effective December 18. Earlier he was at Princeton University, and before that at Brigham Young University.

Harry Campbell was appointed Chief Conservator/Assistant to the President, at the Conservation Division of Information Conservation, Inc. in North Carolina, effective December 5. His new phone number is 910/375-1726. He was previously with the Ohio State University Libraries as Head of Collection Maintenance and Bindery Preparation Departments. His name first appeared in the Abbey Newsletter in July 1982, in connection with a report of the University of Cincinnati's Vacudyne (a fumigation chamber).

Deanna Marcum became president of the Council on Library Resources, Inc., at the end of January. (The CLR was established by the Ford Foundation in 1956 to aid in the solution of library problems.) She came to this position from the Library of Congress, where she was director of Public Service and Collections Management.

Francis Archer, a retired pathologist and a bookbinder and restorer since the 1970s in Evanston, Illinois, died recently at the age of 75.

Deborah Howe has accepted the position of Collections Conservator at Northwestern University Library as of January 16th. Her address is: 1935 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL 60208 (tel. 708/491-7607, e-mail d-howe@nwu.edu).

Three new appointments have been made at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia:

Susan K. Filter, a conservator at the Center since 1989, has been appointed Senior Conservator. Earlier she studied in Venice and at USC, and had a Mellon Advanced Fellowship.

Virgilia Rawnsley has been promoted to Director of Preservation Services, having served as Preservation Services Officer since 1989. She will coordinate all outreach services of the Center.

Anne Downey has been appointed conservator. She is a graduate of the Buffalo State College conservation program, and has completed two paper conservation internships, one of which was at the Center.
