A Thank-You to Supporters

The editor and trustees of Abbey Publications, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, appreciate the support received from the people and organizations listed below, as well as from those who gave smaller amounts.

We consider all donations to be intended for Abbey Publications (thus contributing to the Abbey Newsletter, the Alkaline Paper Advocate and other publications and products of this office). In the 12 months preceding December 24, donations from readers have totaled $7062. This is about $4,500 less than it was last year this time.

A Trustees' Fund was set up in December 1993 to receive donations from Abbey Publications' trustees. As of December 23, 1995, it had $3350 in it; however, most of this was donated before 1995. Only $1,150 was put into this fund during 1995. Readers' and trustees donations together for the last 12 months totals $8,212, as shown in the table.

Correction

In the review of John Havermans' Ph.D. dissertation, Environmental Influences on the Deterioration of Paper (p. 92), I questioned the use of the concept "tensile stiffness," saying that tensile strength and stiffness were two entirely different properties. In everyday speech they are, but apparently the concept has some currency, because an author in one of the paper industry journals referred to it. Neither TAPPI nor ASTM has a test for tensile stiffness, however.

The Literature Backlog for the Abbey Newsletter

For the last two years, there has been a library cart behind my desk with 100 or so books and other publications on it, waiting to be mentioned in the Literature column. This is the backlog that built up during the move to Texas. Even now, with things running smoothly, there will never be time to get to it, because there are more publications coming out all the time, and I have more to say about most of them.

The obvious solution is merely to list the ones I cannot get to, and be more selective about those I do review. After all, this is a general practice in the serial publishing world. I will issue a list of items in the backlog, arranged by subject, author and a limited number of keywords. I hate to do this, because I see the Literature column as the most important one in the newsletter.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1200 subscribers. All subscriptions are for the calendar year. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise, until October 1; after that, it is assumed that the subscription is for the following year. Checks or international money orders may be made out in U.S. dollars, payable to Abbey Publications; send to 7105 Geneva Dr., Austin, TX 78723, USA. Foreign checks must have the name of a U.S. bank printed on the front. International payments can be made by VISA or Mastercard.

Paid advertisements, except for job ads, are not accepted. Job advertisements are billed at the rate of $50 for the heading and the first ten lines (55-60 characters per line), plus $2 per line thereafter. Any notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received will be honored within six months of publication. Defective issues will be gladly replaced on request.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts and the Institute of Paper Science & Technology Abstract Bulletin. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print, and each volume has its own index. Interim indexes for the current volume are available on request.

The Editor encourages readers to photocopy freely from the Newsletter; but the Editor's permission must be obtained before making more than 20 copies of lengthy or signed articles. This allows any necessary corrections to be made before duplication.

Abbey Publications is a nonprofit tax-exempt corporation (tax ID #87-0436104). Its other publication is the Alkaline Paper Advocate. It is the policy of Abbey Publications to use alkaline paper for both newsletters. In recent years, the paper has been Weyerhaeuser Cougar Opaque, which meets the ANSI standard (Z39.48-1984).
