Bookbinding Faculty Position
The University of Alabama

The School of Library and Information Studies, College of Communication, at The University of Alabama invites applications and nominations for a tenure-earning assistant professor position to begin Fall 1998. The primary responsibilities of this position will be in teaching a full sequence of bookbinding courses in the 60-credit hour, accredited M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program.

Responsibilities: An applicant should have a wide variety of bookbinding experience, including strong bench skills, and the ability and desire to practice and teach master's level courses in a number of the following areas: edition binding, boxmaking, protective containers, decorative paper techniques, Eastern binding styles, alternative binding structures, historical binding structures, vellum/ leather work, and curating/mounting book arts exhibitions. Other related areas of expertise are desirable. The applicant will be responsible for teaching and continued development of the bookbinding area of our craft-oriented book arts program, with its strong literary focus. An applicant should be interested in collaborative book work with colleagues, and will be expected to create bookbindings and publish/exhibit widely. Significant activity as a bookbinder, and a growing record in publication/exhibition is required. The position also involves serving on faculty committees, advising students, and participating collegially as one of twelve faculty members.

Qualifications: Desirable: M.F.A. and teaching experience preferred.

Salary and benefits: Mid-thirties, for a nine month appointment, with a generous benefits package.

Library Conservator
The Hagley Museum and Library

The Hagley Museum and Library, an independent re-search library specializing in business and technological history, is seeking a Library Conservator to develop and carry out a comprehensive preservation and restoration program for its imprints, pictorial, archive materials.

Qualifications: Required: Graduate degree from recognized book and manuscripts conservation training pro-gram plus minimum 2 years' related experience or equivalent experience in conservation of library materials.

Desirable: Familiarity with preservation issues in research libraries desirable.
