Bookbinding Faculty Position
The University of Alabama

The School of Library and Information Studies, College of Communication, at The University of Alabama invites applications and nominations for a tenure-earning assistant professor position to begin Fall 1998. The primary responsibilities of this position will be in teaching a full sequence of bookbinding courses in the 60-credit hour, accredited M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program.

Responsibilities: An applicant should have a wide variety of bookbinding experience, including strong bench skills, and the ability and desire to practice and teach master's level courses in a number of the following areas: edition binding, boxmaking, protective containers, decorative paper techniques, Eastern binding styles, alternative binding structures, historical binding structures, vellum/ leather work, and curating/mounting book arts exhibitions. Other related areas of expertise are desirable. The applicant will be responsible for teaching and continued development of the bookbinding area of our craft-oriented book arts program, with its strong literary focus. An applicant should be interested in collaborative book work with colleagues, and will be expected to create bookbindings and publish/exhibit widely. Significant activity as a bookbinder, and a growing record in publication/exhibition is required. The position also involves serving on faculty committees, advising students, and participating collegially as one of twelve faculty members.

Qualifications: Desirable: M.F.A. and teaching experience preferred.

Salary and benefits: Mid-thirties, for a nine month appointment, with a generous benefits package.

Environment: The 19,000 student University of Alabama is located near the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa, AL, an area of some 150,000 people, 50 miles from Birmingham and within easy driving distance from Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Tuscaloosa's business community is diverse and enjoys a strong cooperative relationship with the University. Major employers include the JVC Corporation, Mercedes Benz, among others, and a thriving commercial and financial climate make the University and its environs particularly attractive. Library Conservator
The Hagley Museum and Library

The Hagley Museum and Library, an independent re-search library specializing in business and technological history, is seeking a Library Conservator to develop and carry out a comprehensive preservation and restoration program for its imprints, pictorial, archive materials.

Qualifications: Required: Graduate degree from recognized book and manuscripts conservation training pro-gram plus minimum 2 years' related experience or equivalent experience in conservation of library materials.

Desirable: Familiarity with preservation issues in research libraries desirable.
