- Charles Dollar, formerly a staff member at the National Archives
in Washington, DC, was asked by the University of British Columbia a
few years ago to teach courses in electronic records management and
archives. He moved there in July 1994. One of the four courses he
teaches is "Preservation of Archival and Library Material," in which
he emphasizes preservation management rather than the technical

- Frederick Bearman, formerly head of conservation for Columbia
University Libraries, took up a new post on November 3 as Director

- Carol Sue Whitehouse has left the Newberry Library to open up

- Elmer Eusman, who gave a paper on "Wet-Dry Boundaries in
Cellulose" at the 1994 AIC conference, has accepted a position as
paper conservator in the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam,
where he will be working on iron gall ink degradation, as part of an
international research effort. His address will be: Conservation

- Michèle Cloonan has been named chair of the University of
California/Los Angeles's Department of Library and Information
Science.
- GraceAnne E. DeCandido has started her own firm, Blue Roses
Editorial and Web Consulting, to help libraries and library
associations with their writing, editing, content oversight and Web
planning.
- Lester Asheim and Gordon R. Williams were in the "In Memoriam"
column of the October American Libraries. Lester Asheim
was dean of the University of Chicago Graduate Library School,
1952-1961; and Gordon Williams wrote a report on the brittle books
problem for ARL and CLR in 1965, describing the size of the
preservation problem, and proposing a national preservation
collection.
- Dora Middleton, who married Bernard Middleton in 1951 and was
later made an honorary member of the Guild of Contemporary
Bookbinders in appreciation of her hosting the meetings held in the
Middleton workshop, died August 2. Her obituary, by Marianne
Tidcombe, appeared in the Designer Bookbinders
Newsletter for Autumn 1997.
