People

• Mark Andersson was appointed head of the Bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, effective September, 1998. He graduated from the school in 1992 and worked for the next four years at the University of Washington Libraries on conservation of general and special collections. • Catherine Aster was appointed Head of Preservation Services at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University September 1. She was previously Collections Conservation Librarian of the General Libraries at the University of Texas Austin, and before that Assistant Conservator of the Lee Library at Brigham Young University. • Maria Fredericks has become Head of Conservation at Columbia University as of October 1st.
• Richard Frieder became Library Director at the Connecticut Historical Society on September 23. For the previous fourteen years he headed the preservation program at Northwestern University Library. He was very active in cooperative preservation activities of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC), and led efforts in mass deacidification and digital technology. • Erika Heinen has joined the Yale University Library as Collections Care Librarian, a new position at Yale. She is a recent graduate of the library preservation program at the University of Texas at Austin.
• Alan Howell, formerly Conservation/Preservation Manager at the State Library of New South Wales, has taken a position at the State Library of Victoria as Manager, Preservation and Storage.
• Caroline Keck turned 90 on October 6. Jean Portell, who has been a fan of hers for nearly 40 years, posted a note on the Conservation DistList September 30, inviting her friends and admirers to drop her a note or send a card on the occasion.
• Robert H. Patterson, founder of the newsletter CAN (Conservation Administration Newsletter), retired May 1998 from his position as Director of Libraries, McFarlin Library, University of Tulsa, after 17 years with the library. He received a plaque last spring for his years of service to AMIGOS and the preservation community. Que Pasa? v.19 Mark Roosa becomes the Conservation Chief at the Library of Congress in mid-October, according to the Washington Conservation Guild Newsletter for September.
• Pam Spitzmueller now works in the Harvard University and Harvard College Libraries as the James W. Needham Chief Conservator for Special Collections. She was formerly Conservator of the University of Iowa Libraries.
