Preservation Librarian
Position Description: Plans, organizes, coordinates, and implements preservation program for the University of Iowa Libraries in collaboration with the Conservator and other Preservation Staff. Includes management and coordination of preservation activities for all formats, reformatting efforts, disaster preparedness planning, staff and patron education related to preservation, coordination of preservation activities with branch libraries and other processing units, and super-vision of the Preservation Department. Current program development agenda includes significant expansion of preservation services for non-print collections. The Preservation Department includes units for assessment and reformatting, binding and marking, and a conservation unit responsible for physical treatments. The Preservation Librarian manages the preservation budget; is responsible for the over-sight of grant-funded preservation projects and outsourced preservation services; participates in the preparation of preservation components of grant proposals; and is expected to represent the Libraries in appropriate regional and national forums. In addition to the Preservation Librarian, the Preservation Department consists of one professional (Conservator) and eight library assistants, as well as student employees. The position reports to the Director for Collections and Information Resources.
Qualifications:
Required: Graduate degree from ALA accredited library and information science program, or equivalent; general know-ledge of preservation operations in a research library environment; minimum of three years professional library experience; demonstrated managerial and leadership abilities; excellent oral and written communications skills; excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills; demonstrated commitment to professional involvement.
Preferred: Working knowledge of the preservation of magnetic and photographic media, including their storage, use, dubbing, and migration and of preservation issues related to digital imaging, archiving, and metadata generation.
Salary and Appointment: Appointment rank and salary will be based on relevant experience and educational background and will be made at the Librarian II or III level. Salary range $32,775-$55,105. Paper Conservation Intern
The Conservation/Preservation Department of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), a museum and study centre devoted to the art of architecture and its history, is pleased to announce a twelve-month internship in paper conservation funded by the Getty Grant Program (Los Angeles).
The intern will focus on two projects:
The intern will also take part in the day-to-day operations of the Conservation Department and will be expected to participate in professional activities such as conferences, workshops, and visits to other institutions.
Candidates will be considered who are recent graduates (maximum three years since graduation) of a recognized training program. Knowledge of both English and French are assets.

The Library of Congress is seeking a Supervisory Conservator to head its Conservation Division's Book and Paper Section. The selected candidate will supervise employees in the examination of collection items to determine conservation needs and the most appropriate treatment based on established criteria, documentation, materials analysis and testing. Other duties include working with staff to develop, establish, coordinate, and implement a Library-wide conservation program appropriate to the collection needs; maintaining fiscal control of conservation; adhering to ethical conservation standards of practice; and assuring the safety of all items referred to Section for treatment.
Qualified candidates must have knowledge of conservation techniques and practices as well as supervisory and program management skills.
