• Judith Reed retired in August from her job as conservation librarian at the New York Botanical Garden Library.
• Mira Berger wrote last April 30 to announce that the Art Conservation Research Foundation, Ltd., had achieved the purpose for which it had been established by Gustav Berger and others 20 years ago—to solve problems involved in canvas paintings' tendency to crack, deteriorate, and/or disintegrate—and so it was dissolved in 2000 and results have been published in a book, Conservation of Paintings: Research and Innovations, by Gustav A. Berger with William H. Russell, published by Archetype Publications in London in July 2000.
• Max Saltzman, who had been in bad health during the previous year, died February 26, 2001, in Los Angeles. The New York Times published his obituary April 1, 2001. He was a giant in his field, color pigments and color measurement; he taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, coathored Principles of Color Technology, worked in industry, consulted with museums, became a Fellow of the AIC, and earned many other honors. A fund has been set up to support student research in art conservation science using color technology; contact the Saltzman Fund at RIT Center for Imaging Science, Rochester, NY.
• Sally Buchanan, associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Information Science, received the Paul Banks and Carolyn Harris Preservation Award, presented by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS, a division of the ALA) June 18, during the ALA annual conference. The award came with a $1,500 grant donated by Preservation Technologies, L.P.
• Donia Conn was appointed to the position of Assistant Conservator at the Syracuse University Library in June. She was most recently Book and Paper Conservator at West Lake Conservators in Skaneateles, New York.
• Stephanie Watkins, Head of Paper Conservation at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas, Austin, was named a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation in December 2000. This honor is based upon the recommendations of current Fellows of the AIC.
