Vermont
Students at Trinity College in Burlington were among the 110 Green Mountain volunteers who reported on 262 outdoor sculptures. Lorado Taft, one of America's most preeminent sculptors, created a monument in Brandon dedicated to politician and Vermonter Stephen Douglas. Known as the "Little Giant" for his 4.5 foot height and mighty oratorical skills, Douglas lost the presidency to Abraham Lincoln on the Democratic ticket. Vermont also has one of the few outdoor memorials to women in the country. At Middlebury College there stands a Works Progress Administration (WPA) marble relief portrait of Emma Willard, who wrote the charter for women's education in 1818.
