Narrative

5. Optional Narrative Description

Please provide a brief narrative description of the preservation program, and describe specific preservation projects being undertaken by the Library and their anticipated duration.

Preservation Division
The New York Public Library

The Division is responsible for the care of the collections and therefore provides binding, conservation treatment, collections care, reformatting and other preservation services for The Research Libraries.

The Preservation Division continues to evolve as new challenges and different organizational configurations emerge within The Research Libraries. The changing relationship between the three existing centers--Humanities, Performing Arts, The Schomburg and The Science Industry & Business Libraryin process--has played a part in re-engineering preservation servicesin a center oriented Research Library organization.

The Division maintains a collection of catalogued and uncatalogued materials related to conservation and preservation. Catalogued materials are accessible through CATNYP. Staff and researchers may use uncatalogued materials in Room 65, the Preservation Division Administrative Office.

The Division has been actively involved in The Library's investigation of digital technology.

The programs for binding new materials, microfilming, preservation photocopying, rebinding, collection cleaning, conservation treatment, phased boxing, collection maintenance and the Collections Improvement Project continued to contribute to the preservation goals of The Research Libraries.
