A protective cover or CHEMISE of soft
leather, such asDOESKIN (1) , or, in
the case of blankbooks, a material such as canvas,
sewn or slipped over a leather-covered book for
protection against abrasion, moisture, light, etc.
Soft leather covers were common in the Middle Ages
and early Renaissance, and canvas or cloth slip-on
covers are still being used for blankbooks. (115 )
