rectangular style
A style of binding decoration executed in the
bindery of SAMUEL
MEARNE for Charles II of England, while Mearne
was the Royal bookbinder. It consists of a simple
three-line gilt rectangular panel with a crown or
similar emblem at each corner, often with a roll
on the inside of the rectangle in blind. Although
the usual leather used was crimson morocco, many
such bindings were in calfskin or sheepskin. (156 )
