The crescent-shaped tongue of leather extending above and below the spine of some 12th century bindings and probably intended to facilitate the removal of the book from a chest where it was stored spine uppermost. 2. A small square or rectangular piece of paper, card, plastic, leather, or fabric attached to the fore edge of a leaf, and bearing one or more characters to serve as a guide or INDEX .
