template
A pattern made of board, metal, or plastic and
used as a guide in cutting leather for covers or
spines and corners, or cases for library or hand
edition bindings. Before the days of machine
edition binding, a template made to the proper
size for the edition being bound, when positioned
on the sides, level with the outer edge of the
cover, could be marked to give the trimming
positions, which not only saved time by
eliminating the necessity of making hundreds of
marks with dividers, but also made it possible to
cut all siding papers together to one size. (236 , 256 )
