tied down ( tied bands )
A simple binding ornamentation consisting of lines
impressed along either side of each raised hand,
which continued onto. and were joined part way
across, the sides. A small floral or leaf design
was used to terminate the lines. The lines were
either in gilt or blind and were executed with a
pallet. The decoration is derived from the early
technique of TYING
DOWN the bands. Also called "ties." (156 )
