trimmed in the round
A book that is trimmed after rounding. Books that
are to be gilded on all three edges are sometimes
trimmed in this manner to facilitate the work of
the gilder. In order to trim the fore edge in the
round, the round must first be removed temporarily
by forcing the spine against the guide of the
cutting machine, or by the use of TRINDLES , if the
book has laced-on boards and is to be trimmed with
the plow. It is very difficult and frequently
impossible to remove all of the round by either
method. If the book is to be trimmed in the
guillotine, the concave fore edge is filled in
with CHIPBOARD to
keep the paper from breaking away when the head
and tail are trimmed. Cf: TRIMMED IN THE SQUARE
