A Scientific Classification System Using Examples from the Seegers Collection

Abstract: With the onset of industrialisation in the 19th century, the production of decorated papers changed from a craft into industrial mass production that was accompanied by a proliferation of forms and fields of application. A scientific technical system for characterising decorated papers derived from the materials and the production technologies used has recently gained acceptance. A proposal for a technical terminology system based on the experience of the conservation of the Seegers collection and the description of its historical materials and decorated paper technologies is provided for the characterising of the early industrial decorated papers of this collection from the second half of the 19th century. Furthermore, the modern physical analytical techniques of Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry (SNMS) were used for the first time for chemical analysis, quantification of elements and for elemental depth profiling of the colours and coatings of decorated paper samples. Through EDX and SNMS, re- search data on the materials and production technologies used were obtained for these selected paper samples, which support their classification under the proposed technical terminology system. This system can also be used and extended to characterise other collections of early industrial decorated papers.
Zusammenfassung: Mit dem Einsetzen der Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert wandelte sich die Buntpapier-Herstellung vom Handwerk zur industriellen Massenproduktion mit einer Vervielfachung der Erscheinungsformen und Anwendungsgebiete. Gegenwärtig setzt sich eine wissenschaftlich-technische Betrachtungsweise der Buntpapiere auf Grundlage der eingesetzten Materialien und Herstellungstechnologien durch. Basierend auf Erfahrungen bei der restauratorischen Aufarbeitung der Sammlung und der Beschreibung von Materialien sowie frühindustrieller Herstellungstechnologien für Buntpapiere werden in dieser Arbeit Vorschläge für eine mögliche systematische Terminologie der in der Buntpapiersammlung Seegers vorhandenen frühindustriellen Papiere aus der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts gemacht. Weiterhin wird erstmals die Anwendung von modernen physikalischen Analyseverfahren, der Rasterelektronenmikroskopie gekoppelt mit energiedispersiver Röntgenanalytik sowie der Sekundär-Neutralteilchen-Massenspektrometrie auf Buntpapiere dargestellt und gezeigt, wie sich mit diesen Methoden Informationen über die verwendeten Farbmittel und Überzüge historischer Buntpapiere gewinnen lassen. Damit können die praktischen Erfahrungen und Vermutungen aus der ausgewerteten historischen Fachliteratur mit konkreten Ergebnissen an Beispielen eingeordnet und untermauert werden. Die vorgestellte technische Systematik könnte auch auf andere frühindustrielle Buntpapiersammlungen angewendet und gegebenenfalls erweitert werden.

Abstract: Foxing stains can greatly affect the visual appearance of works of art on paper. However the decision to remove the stains is one of the most sensitive a conservator can make because the causes of foxing on paper are still not well understood. Analysis and treatment of the object should be methodical to minimize the potential risks associated with bleaching methods. The identification, analysis and treatment of foxing stains on two contemporary etchings by the artists Adriana Maraz� and David Gas�paric� are discussed.
Zusammenfassung: Stockflecken können den visuellen Eindruck von Kunst auf Papier sehr stören. Die Entscheidung, sie zu entfernen, ist eine der heikelsten, die ein Restaurator treffen muß, da die Ursachen für Stockflecken auf Papier noch immer nicht vollständig geklärt sind. Untersuchungen am Objekt und restauratorische Eingriffe sollten methodisch geplant werden, um die potentiellen Gefahren, die mit Bleichverfahren verbunden sind, zu verringern. Anhand von zwei zeitgenössischen Radierungen der Künstler Adriana Maraz� und David Gas�paric� wird die Identifikation, Analyse und Behandlung von Stockflecken beschrieben.
