Bob Futernick, Paper Conservator, and his staff at Legion of Honor in San Francisco has found that the use of heat can be an effective way to remove tapes. Using a heated spatula or hair dryer, they have found it possible to remove tape film and some residue adhesive. The remaining adhesive can sometimes be removed with a kneaded or gum eraser, provided the paper is strong and surface is hard enough.
Bob Futernick is working on a light weight solid support system with rag board covering using a foam-core like substance which is extremely strong and light weight. It is hoped that this system may provide an alternative to the increasingly expensive and difficult to work with honeycomb materials.
