Just a quick comment prompted by Mike Biel's
question concerning whether there was any risk from sticky tape if winding
directly between reels without tape travelling over guides and
rollers.
Hi Michael!
When I was working down the road form you in Berea
I encountered reels (Shamrock or Irish tape I believe) where the sticky shed was
so far advanced that simply separating two layers of tape caused the coating to
peel off so you could look right through the clear substrate!  Thus, to
answer your question, it wouldn't matter if the tape came in contact with any
surface--  in this case at least, the problem was so severe that the tape
would have been destroyed simply by winding.
Best,
Steve Green
