I just looked at the specs for the preamp George
B-N mentions. It's $ 800.
I notice it has no vertical postion, at least
according to the English text. It thus cannot play vertical-cut
records. There there is also no way to balance the two lateral
channels to a nearly inaudible, nulling out point, then reversing phase to be
sure of equal output from each groove wall
side.
Use of the 80 cps filter should be
for subjective copying but, if we are to follow our own rules, when making
objective, archival copies, record all that low frequency
noise against the tiime elements of it can be used to track playing speed
variations.
I regret the Waxworks II is discontinued, though
their web page was still up the last time I looked under that name in Yahoo's
search box. It was $ 400 and, though it lacked an output volume control,
was otherwise excellent, nicely transparent. It's designed to plug
into the aux input on a preamp. Here it goes directly into my
board. I wouldn't mind finding another one.
