Lots of good points from both you and Richard Hess.
One other point to consider for archival preservation is that you cannot
guarantee 100% accurate retrieval of the digital information from an
audio CD. The format was introduced a long time ago, and is designed
for acceptable listening rather than archiving.
A .wav file or .aiff file stored as computer data on a CD can be
retrieved exactly, because a CD-ROM has to guarantee to play back
software files perfectly. The CD-ROM format uses identifiable sectors,
as on a hard drive, while audio CD does not.
It is worth while to consider storing the digitised audio in both
formats, or in .wav form only. (Any computer can play back a .wav file
through its sound card.)
