RE: arsclist Vinyl records and blast freezer

This is not expert advice by any means:

A couple of seconds in a microwave oven will kill most bugs. Small ones even
tend to disappear in the process (pulverized?). I have no idea, however,
what it will do to the tapes (or the sound on them), not to mention their
metal boxes, which should not be "nuked", as everyone knows. Perhaps a test
could be made beforehand.

I am concerned about the almost inevitable condensation that would occur
after the blast freezing.

Subject: arsclist Vinyl records and blast freezer

Hello,

The Library of Virginia recently acquired a collection of sound recordings
from a local radio station dating from 1925. This collection includes vinyl
records (as large as 18"), cassettes, and reel to reel tapes.

Apparently, the collection is infested with bugs and we are wondering if
using a blast freezer to kill the bugs is a safe method.

Thanks in advance, Jay
