arsclist sound preservation job

A grant project titled "The Civil Rights Era in Mississippi" seeks to hire a sound or audio engineer or technician to preserve oral histories and sound recordings. This two-year grant is a project of the University of Southern Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and Tougaloo College. The three institutions collectively hold more than 400 sound civil rights recordings including oral histories with activists, planning meetings of civil rights organizations, and recorded speeches of state and local politicians. The goal of the project is to preserve these important historical voices for future generations.

The sound engineer/technician will 1) conduct preservation copying of cassette and reel-to-reel recordings from the 1960s and ‘70s following archival procedures, recording preservation copies on reel-to-reel; 2) migrate recordings to digital formats; 3) create user copies on CD Rom, filtering noise and creating optimal copies; 4) identify and tag recordings to prepare them for archiving according to project procedures; 5) supervise a graduate student assistant.

We seek to hire someone with knowledge of and experience in both analog and digital formats. Any previous experience with preservation of analog recordings is a plus. In order to decrease the need for transporting fragile recordings, the job has work stations in both Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This is a full-time position, beginning August 1, 2002. The annual salary is $28,000 to $36,000, depending on experience. This grant project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. All of the consortium institutions are equal opportunity/affirmative action/Americans with Disability Act employers.
