Bruno's original question was about cataloging a private collection to aid
in searching for items in that collection, not about creating sales
catalog. And that is the context in which I suggested that OCLC might be a
useful resource.
As for the cost, it's variable, based amount of usage and several other
considerations, with credits for information submitted to the union
catalog, and charges for amount of access. But it's quite likely that the
university with which Bruno is associated already has an OCLC account, and
that a friendly librarian might be willing to offer some local advice about
using the service.
This is a quite different requirement from that of a dealer, who, as you
rightly observed, must be extremely selective about acquisitions. Many of
those things that "simply do not sell" still have a place in collections,
and need to be indexed along with the stuff that you, as a dealer, consider
desirable.
