This is absolutely correct. The solution is not not to use anything " 'cause
it won't work" but to use a formulation that could be applied to the tape as
it travels and be completely dry by the time the tape hits the heads. Or, do
it on a different machine not used for playback (dummy recorder). In many
cases the later is easier on the tape, especially if the player has no
heads, or no fixed guides, or a combination of both. This way the lubricant
won't rub onto the recorder heads causing an un reparable damage.
