[ARSCLIST] ARSC-SAM Conference in Cleveland- Update!

Please Save the Dates!

Before everyone departs for the holidays, we wanted to provide you with
a quick update regarding the forthcoming ARSC-SAM joint conference to be
held at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio, from March
10-14, 2004- just twelve weeks away! Most importantly, please make note
of the new dates (formerly March 10-13). Both ARSC and SAM sessions will
continue through Sunday morning, March 14th- so if you make your travel
arrangements early, please plan to remain at the hotel until
approximately 1 p.m.

The 2004 conference features a stellar line up of sessions and special
events. ARSC's Education and Training Committee will be presenting a
pre-conference workshop on Topics in Oral History and Music Field
Recordings on Wednesday March 10, from 9:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m, followed by
an evening opening reception from 8:00-10:00 p.m. Another special event
is planned for Thursday evening- a private, free, after-hours tour of
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and a discussion with senior
staff. A Friday afternoon bus excursion will deliver conference
attendees to University Circle where a special session highlighting the
Cleveland Orchestra will be held on the campus of Case Western Reserve
University. Those wishing to spend an afternoon sight-seeing can explore
other University Circle cultural institutions including the Cleveland
Museum of Art, Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland Botanical
Garden, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Cleveland Institute of
Music, among others. The Friday excursion will be capped by a reception
hosted by the CWRU Department of Music, and then buses will return to
the hotel in time for "A Celebration of Music from Cleveland"- a special
ARSC Friday-evening session. The Saturday-evening joint reception and
banquet will be another gala event, with reception entertainment
provided by the SAM Brass Band (ARSC members are invited to join!).

Program highlights include three joint ARSC-SAM sessions: "Music
Downloading and File Swapping: Differing Views" ;
"Recording the History of Folk and Traditional Music" ; and "Collections
and Archiving." ARSC people ought to be quite interested in SAM's Sousa
Sesquicentennial session and in many of the other intriguing SAM
sessions discussing American music. All registered attendees will be
able to freely attend any ARSC or SAM session, regardless of membership
in one organization or the other. The conference will conclude shortly
after noon on Sunday.

Conference registration materials will be mailed out by the first week
of January. The cut-off date for early registration and hotel
reservations is Monday, February 9, 2004. Detailed information about
the conference program, hotel, and special events along with
registration forms for both the ARSC-SAM conference and the
pre-conference workshop will be available shortly after the New Year on
the conference web pages at:
http://www.american-music.org/conferences/Cleveland/Clevelandinfo.htm.
A link from the ARSC website (www.arsc-audio.org) will also direct you
to the conference web pages.

Please make plans now to attend the joint ARSC-SAM conference, which is
shaping up to be the most memorable event in recent history!

Bill Klinger (ARSC Local Arrangements Chair) and Brenda Nelson-Strauss
(ARSC Conference Manager)
