I think that while it's prudent to make analog masters concurrently with
digital ones, that it's often necessary if not not merely desireable to do
them sequentially.  Examples of this scenario include tape that's severely
shedding, (transport has to be frequently cleaned), different portions of
disks requiring different styli, and tape & wire  that are breaking .  I
advocate doing 24/96 transfers & then making the analog masters from them,
once they've been assemble edited.  Another advantage to doing them
sequentially is that you can FULLY PAY ATTENTION to the mastering. Even if
you monitor the work from the analog play head (if your analog machine
permits this), you still are only assuming that the digital input remains
trouble free.
