According to that source Hermann Scherchen's live recording from 1950 with
Wiener Symphoniker, Hilde Rossl-Majdan and Konzertvereinigung Wiener
Staatsopernchor is the earliest one.

Also helpful are two books:

Smoley, Lewis M.: The Symphonies of Gustav Mahler. A Critical Discography
with Commentary, Westport 1986

I would also like to recommend a 5.1-surround studio-recording from 2001 by
Pierre Boulez with Wiener Philharmoniker, Anne Sofie von Otter, Women's
Chorus of the Wiener Singverein & Wiener Sangerknaben on Deutsche Grammophon
(hybrid SACD & 2CD stereo)

Can anyone point me towards any recordings of symphony orchestras in
which the trumpets use the old style (mid 19th century) large bore F
trumpets?  I am particularly interested if a version of the Franck D
minor was recorded that way.

Also, what are the earliest recordings of Mahler's Symphony No. #3?
