The eagerly awaited book by Cemal Ünlü about historical recordings in Turkey
is finally out.
In its more than 500 pages you'll find a general introduction about history
of recording, and chapters about Turkish Phonograph, Gramophones, recordings
by foreign labels, establishing of local labels, recording in Anatolia of
folk music, electrical recording, radio recording, 50 years of 78 recording
in Turkey, the last 15 years and the emergence of jazz.
The rich iconography include labels, catalogues, and even a notebook by
Tanburi Cemil Bey. It is difficult to describe the richness and detail of
this labour of love.
The best is yet to come - attached there is a cd with 7 music tracks and
what amounts to a complete searchable catalogue (artist, label, catalogue
number, title and makam) of about 15.000 turkish 78, approximating
completness
and laying the foundation for a sorely needed national discography.
Very reasonably priced at about 35 euro, this is a must-have for all
institutions
dealing with history of recording, "ethnic" music, and all collectors
interested
in this area of the world, and if it goes out of stock will became a
collectors'
item like the Catalogue of the Ta&#351; Plak ve Gramofon exhibition which
is its perfect visual companion.
