The reason for the heavy stylus pressure is that the counterweight normally
on the arm was lost when I moved to CA. in 55. The reason for the Pickering
carts was the individual tracks were mono, and cut on Emorys Skully lathe.
The lathe had a vertical motion that made a 54 spoke pattern on the record.
Since the top of the Pickering stylus was anchored to the cart, it did not
respond to this motion. If you view a record cut on a Skully the spokes are
quite evident. The stylus pressure on a properly set up arm was about 3
grams. If the records were played with other carts of that time, and the
system had a good low end response it would rattle the windows.
