If you are using a UNIX-like operating system (including Mac OS X), the
free command-line program cdda2wav will rip CDs in mono (I believe it
halves the amplitude of both channels and sums them), and can also test
whether or not a CD is mono by comparing the channels.  You can get
that at http://www.cdda2wav.de/.
