Re: [ARSCLIST] Is recording to Reel-to-reel still the preferred preservation method?
I have listened to many converters myself and find the most transparent to
be the Genex and dCS converters. If the choice is artistic, anything goes,
if the choice is transparency to archives with 1 or 2 track material, I lean
towards the dCS stuff.
Claus,
Transparent relative to what? An analog source? Do you mean flat? With
every single piece of gear, not limited to D to A convertors, but every tape
head, every stylus & every electronic device in a chain applying it's own
frequency response, even if slight, how do you ever define or really achieve
true transparency? I would like to suggest a more practical solution of
seeking out one versatile convertor with a measurable freq response that is
as close to flat as you can find, then monitoring directly through that
convertor while simultaneously using it for A to D into your workstation.
If you are concerned with an aesthetic requiring more color, make a more
calculated, deliberate & desirable change with other gear before entering
the A to D.
