multiples of 44.1 are better, for they match more audio release formats
than any other, including all high-rez formats on the market and under
discussion.

the only issue is that this makes it difficult to produce reference CDs,
as they need 16/44.
Samplitude and other editors allow you to make a quick 16/44 version of
any file (and sample rate conversion from an integral multiple of 44.1
is much faster and arguably better-sounding -imo- than 48kHz
multiples.)   so if you acquire/transfer at 24/88.2, or 24/176.4, then
it's relatively quick for a program to spit out a 16/44 file for burning
to CDR at high-speed.

the only optical media which wants 48k-multiples is DVD-V, and that is
not an audio format.  DVD-A, CD, SACD, all are based on 44-multiples.
