A subject which interests me greatly and I concur a good article. I can
also recommend reading one of the books mentioned and others:

Chanan, Michael: Repeated takes: a short history of recording and its
                 effects on music
Taylor, Timothy D.: Strange sounds, Music technology and Culture
David Morton: Off the record: The Technology and culture of Sound
                 Recordings in America.
William Howland Kenney: Recorded Music in American Life.
Andre Millard: America on Record.
Jonathan Sterne: The Audible Past.
