On the east coast (low-cost or free shipping in most cases), I like
zzsounds.com. Never been disappointed.
If you want a nice catalog for research, get on Full Compass and Sweetwater
mailing lists so you get their printed catalogs. Then buy somewhere cheaper
like zzsounds (although Full Compass will usually meet or beat other prices,
but they annoy me by only publishing list prices in their catalog).
As far as in-person shopping, I only know the NYC area and the picture is
not good. B&H photo/electronics megastore has the most stuff on display, but
good luck getting any reasonable help or having a quiet enough/calm enough
enivronment to make a decision. I avoid music stores like the plague, but I
know some of them have extensive semi-pro recording offerings nowadays.
