This is true. Any signal processing will increase the word length of the
audio, but there is no reason to convert 16-bit files to 24-bit for this
purpose. The mixer in Pro Tools is 48 bits wide and the TDM bus is 24-bits
wide, therefore any processing is done at a minimum of 24 bits. The
limitation in Pro Tools is that a session must be either 16 or 24 bits, and
files of one bit depth may not be used in a session of the other. But this
effects files used in the session only, the output of the desk will always
be 24 bits. So you can have 16 bit files which are processed at 24 bits and
bounced to disk at 24 bits - retaining the extra bits created by the
processing.
