One point of interest: some existing software already provided some
portion of protection. Since the root kit is not a virus or worm, AV
programs would not be expected to spot it. Anti-Trojan software should
catch the attempt to "phone home" as BOClean does. And the publishers of
AnyDVD assure their users that their program will protect against the
infection in the first place if it is active on the system to defeat
region coding on DVD-Video.
This DRM scheme is the latest demonstration of what seems to be an
unvarying rule: companies are trying to inflict the maximum pain on the
innocent and naive while providing maximum incentive to the guilty and
malicious.
