Greetings Association for Recorded Sound list readers:
The American Library Association's ALCTS/Preservation and Reformatting
Section (PARS) is seeking a panelist to participate in the Reformatting
Discussion Group at the Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. The
discussion group is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 21st,
from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Menger Hotel.
Panelists are being asked to address storage and reformatting issues for
a range of materials, including recorded sound. The participant would
be asked to provide a brief informal presentation that touches on the
following issues:
- Current state of recorded sound preservation.
- Prospects for the extended life of digitized audio content.
- Retention and provision of proper storage for original analog
media that has been digitized
vs. withdrawal and de-accessioning.
- Address how your unique media is reformatted and under what
circumstances do you reformat from the
original to another media (e.g. routine ongoing
procedure, patron demand for access, &c.).
- Address whether you consider the digital or the analog copy to
be the preservation "master."
If someone on this list will be attending the ALA meeting and would like
to participate as a panelist, please contact Atalanta Grant-Suttie
off-list via her home e-mail:
pinewood@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
or call her during the day at 301 496-8015.
Atalanta will provide you with a list of questions to help guide you in
the preparation of your presentation.
Thank you for your attention.
