Back when I was trying to listen to "Recorded Books" cassettes I had some 
finely powdered MolySulfide from National Camera used to lubricate camera 
shutters.  A little of this dusted into the cassette openings and carried through the 
pack by rewinding made them playable.

Very fine graphite powder might work as well.
