I agree with Angie regarding the "Windows people" people comment. I sent
Lou the manual that the Naropa University Audio Archive uses to train
our audio technicians.  This is designed for non-audio people, which our
students are and goes through every step that we use to reformat our
tapes into preservation copies and listening copies.  It should answer
all of his questions.

We use Protools Digi002 and toast, external drives, and Mac computers.
In my studio at home I used external converters, dedicated internal
drives and Sonar.

I think we should all be well past the Mac vs PC conversation and I'm
always surprised to see it come up.  I use both and have no problems
with either platform.

Maybe it isn't mentioned because we "windows audio people" consider it 
common knowledge.  For someone new to digital recording, it may not be.

A drive used for only audio doesn't necessarily have to be an external 
drive, just another drive in the system other than the C drive. I've 
been using ide and scsi drives to record multi-track audio since 1995. 
It has only been in the last few years that I started using firewire. 
And that has really only been for convenience.
