Royal Holloway/CHARM Research Studentship in the History and Analysis of Recorded Music

A three-year fully funded research studentship in the history and analysis of recorded music will be available at Royal Holloway, University of London (http://www.rhul.ac.uk/music) from October 2006.
Supervised by Professor Nicholas Cook, the student will be attached to a research project within CHARM (the AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music, http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk). This project involves the use of computational methods to study performance expression in Chopin's Mazurkas (see http://www.charm.rhul.ac.uk/content/projects/chopin.html); the student will work with recordings of piano music, taking advantage of methods developed within the main project, but in relation to a repertory of his/her own choice.
This is an outstanding opportunity to gain experience in two developing areas of musicology: computational analysis and the analysis of recorded music. We expect that the successful applicant will be educated to Masters level with exposure to musical analysis and/or performance studies; some experience of music computing would be advantageous, but is not a prerequisite as training will be available. The studentship will be on the same terms as standard AHRC doctoral awards (UK/EU fees plus a maintenance award, which is expected to be £14,300 in 2006/07).
