New York Philharmonic Job Posting * Audio Assistant (03/06)

The New York Philharmonic has one of the largest recorded-sound collections of any symphony orchestra with commercial recordings dating back to 1917 and radio broadcasts to the 1930s.  The Archives has recently developed a preservation plan for the archival digitization of this collection.  The radio broadcasts continue today on a 52-week schedule recorded in-house and produced by WFMT with the performances then prepared for streaming on the Orchestra's web site.  The Philharmonic is directly involved with the production of both its commercial recordings on CDs and as downloads.  As well, a variety of projects require the creation of audio clips for use on the web site, lobby listening kiosk and pre-concert lectures, among others.

The Philharmonic has created a full-time position with excellent benefits to assist with these on-going projects.  The position of Audio Assistant would work directly with both the Philharmonic's Archivist/Historian and the Orchestra's Audio Director. 

The Audio Assistant implements the preservation program for archival concerts (50%) and assists audio director with live sound, recording and broadcast production and preparation of sound clips (50%).  

Responsibilities

1.	Carry out high-quality digital transfers of archival concert tapes to non-tape digital storage units for preservation.  Capture meta-data relating to tape and process. Assess condition of tape prior to transfer and determine necessary intermediary steps prior to actual transfer
2.	Archive currently produced audio material, both concert recordings and ancillary material, such as interviews, related to the concert broadcast
3.	Assist Audio Director in recording, radio production and live sound projects
4.	Prepare sound clips from commercial and archival recordings for use on the web, exhibits, lectures, etc
5.	Burn approved CD copies of concerts for conductors, soloists and musicians 	
6.	Assist with various audio projects as deemed necessary
 

Requirements

Bachelors degree in Music with Audio Engineering and two-years of work experience; or extensive experience in the audio field.  Must be prepared to provide work samples and references on request.

·	Basic knowledge of audio recording theory and practice
·	Knowledge of and familiarity with audio preservation techniques and the current issues and directions of the field  
·	Must read music
·	Fairly broad knowledge of the symphonic repertoire   
·	Experience with sound-recording and digital-audio editing
·	Knowledge of computers
·	Must be well organized, meticulous, and able to work with distractions
