I found this recent note from the American Symphony Orchestra League to be
most encouraging...now if we can get the likes of the New York Phil and
Boston Symphony to follow suit...and maybe even pay for the preservation
of their stuff from the sale of downloads...

Saint Paul Cham Orch to offer 35-year radio archive of concerts online
In Monday's (4/24) Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Michael Anthony reports:
"Starting as soon as July 1, listeners will be able to stream and download
much of the 35-year archive of radio performances by the Saint Paul
Chamber Orchestra originally broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio (MPR).
Future concerts recorded for broadcast also will become available. This
expanded format, which offers a larger online archive than is available
from most other American orchestras, is made possible by a new media
agreement announced Monday between the management and the SPCO musicians.
Bruce Coppock, president of the SPCO, said Monday that details were still
being worked out, including whether the streaming would be free to
consumers." Anthony notes: "The SPCO's agreement also allows for the
creation of a new series of one-hour programs for distribution through
American Public Media, MPR's national production and distribution arm. The
new program is scheduled to begin broadcast in January 2007 ... The new
agreement is expected to expand the orchestra's visibility both nationally
and worldwide, since it allows for annual live national and international
radio broadcasts, as well as the ability to broadcast concerts on European
Broadcasting Union member stations."
