In a town like Ann Arbor, you might do best at the library. Search the shelves and maybe use their
online database to see if just "the book" is at another library in their system. If you find a
really good plan, please let us know the book and author.
For what it's worth, custom-build record shelves I've seen seem to follow a couple of general rules:
1. either 1/4" thick sturdy (perhaps hardwood) plywood or 3/4" thick pine or other woods
2. never too much width without vertical supports. Cubes seem to hold a large weight and stack high
without problems. Shelves like Joe Bussard's seem to have verticle members every 2 feet or less,
estimating from the pictures.
3. a thinner plywood board seems to be a good idea in back -- and a mark of a cheapo shelf is lousy
tacking so that years of sliding records in and out makes the back come off.
4. In general, record shelving is best gone wide first and then high. LPs pack a lot of weight into
a small horizontal footprint. Same for 78's.
Hope all that helps. Like I say, if you find a good plan, please share the source. My woodworking
"skill" amounts to being able to make copy-cat cubes out of plywood or pine.

As another on a limited budget, what about plans for making home units?
Would anyone be willing share time-tested designs for shelving especially
heavy 78 collections?
