I used to buy two sets of the 1970's version of the generic steel
shelving and combine the two sets to make one very heavy duty set. -
Overlaps on the verticals and twice as much cross bracing. Never a
collapse. I'm not sure the steel tinfoil being hawked today would be
usable in this way.
I used Luan ply or 10.5 inch tape boxes as needed to take up the space
at the ends of the shlelves so the covers wouldn't get shreaded.

I am using Ikea's Ivar Shelving at home which is pretty cheap and I
think could hold 78s if you get the 17 inch wide boards. Of course
this works best if you have an Ikea store close by.
