Years ago, Jay McKnight made a 400 hz tone cassette for me. It's come in handy many times.

Years ago, on a new cassette recorder, I recorded the time signals
from WWV (short wave). Since then I have used that cassette to test
the speed of other machines. If close, you hear beat frequencies.
Usually, however, they are WAY off!

There can be a difference of 5% between speeds of cassette decks.


I made up a cassette with a measured length of tape to set the speed on
my recorder (now long since dead).
